Yips!
The Musical
Synopsis
Golf and Romance. Both are in play on the Braeburn course
this one fine day in June.
Chuck Nelson believes golf
has lost its soul. And heÕs doing
something about it.
Chuck, a former amateur
golf champ now living in his Õ79 Lincoln, masquerades as a wader-wearing,
water-ball-retrieving innocent moving from club to club. He relies on an evil trick-shot: the dexterous, triple-hit-chip (three
hits of the ball on the same swing).
Golfers with the Òcontrol attitudeÓ seeing this shot are infected with
the dreaded golfersÕ flinch disease:
ÒYips!Ó
And successful Chuck
Nelson is! The yips outbreak at
the Braeburn club is epidemic and has made international news.
Only one victim, Robert
Farley III, returns to fight his newly acquired yips using conventional
methods, such as grip and mechanics. Marge McLean, the local golf pro, aids him in his
effort. She also happens to be
very much in love with Farley. But
Farley is blinded to this fact by his singular, anal focus on his wounded golf
game.
Savannah Jones, the
pretty, divorced club-catering manager, is resistant about getting into a new
relationship but finds herself at the point of really wanting to try again.
Especially after the
Center for Disease Control sends the handsome Doctor Evan Parr to investigate
the club problem.
Zeal, a young native of a
remote Caribbean Island, is on his Òvision quest.Ó His tribe needs a new shaman and he perceives that this
ÒYips Mon,Ó who he has found on the Internet, has Òthe spirit.Ó He is in America to find and bring him
back.
This lighthearted musical addresses the questions: Can Chuck Nelson resist finding a home here at Braeburn and continue to bring the yips to all of golfdom? Can Zeal convince Chuck to come back with him? Can Marge get Farley to focus on anything but golf? Can Evan Parr quell the epidemic? Can Savannah open up to a new romantic relationship? Is Doctor Evan Parr that guy?
